Virginia Military Institute Athletics Director Dr. Dave Diles announced on May 23, 2016 that Dave Forman has been named Director of Strength and Conditioning/Head Football Strength Coach. Forman began his duties the following month, as the director and supervisor of all aspects of Keydet football strength and conditioning. Forman replaces Jimmy Whitten who accepted a position in the VMI Physical Education Department beginning with the 2016-17 academic year. Forman comes to VMI from the University of Colorado where he was the Director of Sports Performance working the Buffaloes’ football program from January, 2013 through December, 2015. Forman oversaw the entire CU Sports Performance department and designed and outfitted a 12,500 square foot $1.5 million Champions Center Weight Room. Prior to his time at Colorado, Forman served as Head Football Strength and Conditioning Coach at San Jose State University from January, 2011 through January, 2013 and was a staff member of the 2012 squad that was a Military Bowl participant. Forman had moved to San Jose State from nearby Stanford where he served three years as a Cardinal strength and conditioning assistant coach from 2008-10 and worked with the football and wrestling programs. In Forman’s final year at Stanford, the Cardinal under head coach Jim Harbaugh enjoyed a banner season going 12-1 including an Orange Bowl title and a final fourth place ranking in the major polls. While in Palo Alto, Forman also worked with Stanford’s wrestling program that finished a university all-time best 11th place at the 2011 NCAA Championships. Forman has ties to the Shenandoah Valley area at James Madison University where he began his strength and conditioning career as an undergraduate student assistant and was a member of the football team as a linebacker from 1999-2002. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from JMU and later earned a M.S. in Exercise Science at the University of Mississippi, Oxford in 2006. “Coach Dave Forman brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to VMI,” said VMI head football coach Scott Wachenheim. “First, Dave’s time at Stanford gave him access to the most recent innovations occurring in the strength and conditioning field. Secondly, Dave gained valuable leadership skills by implementing his own programs at San Jose State and the University of Colorado. Finally, Dave gained familiarity with the state of Virginia and Virginia Military Institute while playing football and graduating from James Madison University. I believe Dave will have an immediate positive impact on our program.” Forman’s extensive work experience also includes an internship with the Detroit Tigers 2004 spring training and a volunteer strength and conditioning coach at the University of Southern California in 2005. He completed a summer internship at the University of Notre Dame in 2006 before holding positions as Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Sacramento State (2006-07) and Northern Arizona (2007) prior to his move to Stanford. "I am very honored and grateful for this opportunity, “said Forman. “Thank you to Dr. Diles, Coach Wachenheim, and everybody involved with the search process for their trust and faith in me. I am ecstatic to be able to return to the Shenandoah Valley, and I am so fortunate and excited to get to work with the very high caliber cadet-athletes of VMI." A native of Glendale, N.Y., Forman is a graduate of St. Francis Prep (Fresh Meadows, N.Y.). He is certified by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association and National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Today’s questions:
Andy - I struggle with plyometrics and understand how complex it can be. I have started to use very basic exercises to help improve landing mechanics and absorbing forces such as single leg hops and now into bounding but I am really struggling to move forward from this as well as trying to keep it fun for the athletes. Do you have any resources or ideas which you would suggest?
Andy - I have an athlete who is a soccer player in-season and I have been asked to plan their program for the reminder of the season [4 months]. He play's every Sunday and can only train twice a week with a training age of 3 years. I was going to try and maintain strength and power over the months but struggling to see what kind of conditioning I may need to include [if any due to 3 soccer training sessions each week] or any ideas of how I can plan the weekly sessions [session 1 strength / session 2 power for example]
Jesse - I’m wondering whether you have any tips/advice on what more I can do to assist my chances in securing a position in the US?
Ben - Recently I have seen an influx of strength & conditioning jobs overseas (United Kingdom, Australia, China). As a seasoned strength coach, I was wondering if you had any advice for someone (me) who is looking to get a strength coach job in another country (i.e., any websites or foreign job markets you would recommend).

Jacques DeVore founder of Sirens and Titans Fitness.
Jacques began his career in fitness training as an elite athlete. He has competed as a wrestler in both high school and college, in cross country, track, lacrosse, martial arts, and both mountain bikes and road bike races. His primary foundation of training was wrestling, which requires great functional fitness and a good understanding of body composition and nutrition.
His experience and passion for exercise fueled his desire to focus on the science of strength and conditioning. Jacques is licensed by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a Certified Specialist in Conditioning and Strength.
He also coaches cyclists and passed the examination to be an Expert Cycling coach for USA cycling. Jacques also established a career outside of sports and fitness in the management of money and the trading of securities which requires extensive time and energy. Jacques was constantly struggling with ways to train that required minimal time during his regular travel. So, he developed short workouts, for himself, which provided superior fitness gains while on the road.
Over 20 years ago Jacques took his deep exercise knowledge and his experience in business to become CEO of Vert Sports Performance center in Santa Monica where he also actively began training world class athletes, including football players prepping for the NFL combine, basketball players in the NBA, tennis, wrestling, grappling, track, baseball, and many other sports. Jacques decided to leave Vert and open Titan Sports Performance in Santa Barbara and created his own training center. Titan was the first sports performance center in Santa Barbara at the time.
Over the last 15 years Titan has provided training to hundreds of athletes, teams, and individuals in Santa Barbara.. For all of Jacques life he has been a competitive athlete, coaching, and training other athletes and individuals on how to improve their fitness. He has not only trained others but is living proof of his training methods. He has kept his fitness at a level that allows him to competitively race his bicycle with minimal training time. Jacques has accomplished this through his understanding of the science of how the human body performs and responds to training.
Jacques has been a resident and active member in the Los Angeles business community since 1984. He is past president of Business Exchange 100, a Los Angeles professional business organization. Jacques has been a “Big Brother” of Los Angeles to 3 little brothers over the last 18 years, is a past member of the Board of Directors of Big Brothers of Greater Los Angeles, and a past member of the Executive Committee. Also, Jacques was a member of the board of the Daniel Freeman Hospital Foundation prior to the hospitals sale to Tenet healthcare. Jacques was born in Texas and raised in California. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of California Davis and an MBA from Pepperdine University and was a visiting scholar to MBA students at Stanford University. Today’s questions:
Tim - As someone who wants to become a strength/human performance coach, what is the best way of going about a masters degree and being a grad assistant with strength coaches. I will be getting my undergrad in exercise science fall 2017, and I am starting to look for potential colleges to get my masters degree. However, I'm confused if I should just focus on a strength and conditioning focus or a masters in kinesiology or something similar is better?
Joey - In your opinion as a coach, does Heart Rate Variability(HRV) affect athlete performance?

Jason - Ron, do you use gym aware or tendo units with your team? If so, do you use different velocities for new athletes compared to veterans during a periodization block?
Marc - Coach question about squats and 90 degrees! Where did 90 degrees come from? I watch my 18 month old and she squats @$$ to ankle. I watch discovery channel and 80 year olds selling food and trinkets on the street squat @$$ to ankle. So why isn't that the standard?
John - In the next 10 years, how do you think the field of Strength and Conditioning will change based on any patterns you've seen from the last decade or recently?
Gary - How do you like to maximize the power equation and which areas do you emphasize (force vs. velocity) - and does it depend on the athlete/position?
Joe - High weight/low reps vs. low weight/high reps in the weight room - where do you think low weight/high reps need to be used in the weight room? Would you consider high reps based on training specificity goals?
Derek - How can new coaches entering the field demonstrate value? How can we change the low entry level salary when a MS and numerous years of experience is required?
