Scott Shirley is Executive Director of Uplifting Athletes and CEO of Pledge It. Uplifting Athletes is a national nonprofit inspiring the rare disease community with hope through the power of sport. Shirley established the organization while on the Penn State football team and started the inaugural “Lift For Life” event in 2003.
Today, Uplifting Athletes has college chapters across the country. Each chapter is run by current student-athletes, providing them with practical job skills while learning how to leverage their popularity to make a positive and lasting impact. Uplifting Athletes has had an estimated economic impact of more than $400 million on the rare disease community. In 2014, the desire to incorporate sports with philanthropy drove Shirley to create Pledge It, an innovative performance-based fundraising application. Through this website, athletes from all levels of sport can engage their fans to support their needs or a charitable cause. Under Shirley’s leadership, Pledge It has worked with hundreds of the nations top teams and professional athletes. Through partnerships with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the American Cancer Society & CBS Sports, Pledge It has created two national programs (touchdownsagainstcancer.com and 3pointchallenge.org) to empower high school and college teams in the fight against cancer.
Shirley received his B.S. & M.Eng. from The Pennsylvania State University and went on to become an Executive Scholar in Nonprofit Management at the Kellogg School at Northwestern University.

Dr. Andy Galpin is a tenured Professor in the Center for Sport Performance at CSU Fullerton and Co-Author of the Best Seller "Unplugged". He was born and raised in beautiful Rochester, WA and is a die-hard Seahawks, Huskies, & Mariner fan. RIP Sonics. As a youth, Andy played every sport at his disposal, excelling at Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Track & Field. While not playing, he worked at grocery stores, gas stations, hay fields, blueberry farms, and in the road construction business. It was during this time he discovered Strength & Conditioning.
Andy took his limited talents to Linfield College to join their Football team and pursue a degree in Exercise Science. While he experienced great success in both (2004 National Championship and 2x Captain and immediate inductee into the "All Ugly" Team), the true reward of this time was the meeting of lifelong friend (Doug Larson). The two fed each other's pursuit of knowledge of human performance and led them to attend the University of Memphis for the Masters degrees in Human Movement Sciences. A bit of luck and excellent faculty mentoring led Doug and Andy to meet Mike Bledsoe and the man formally known as "Barbell Buddha" Chris Moore - all of which later led to the creation of the #1 Health & Fitness Podcast in the world Barbell Shrugged. It also marked the start of Andy's competitive Weightlifting (culminating in his 7th Place finish in the 2007 National Championships), Mixed Martial Arts, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu careers.
Needing to know more about muscle, Andy spent 4 years studying the structure and function of human skeletal muscle at the single cell level, a feat which earned him a PhD in Human Bioenergetics in 2011. This also resulted in the friendship with frequent collaborator Dr. Jimmy Bagley and the ability to open up his own "Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Laboratory" at CSU Fullerton.
He now focuses his attention on teaching classes (Sports Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, Designing Exercise Programs, Applied Strength and Conditioning, Athlete Assessment and Measurement, etc.) and running the BMEP lab (which studies the acute responses and chronic adaptations of human skeletal muscle in response to high force/velocity/power and fatiguing exercise from the whole body, down to the individual muscle fiber and even into the individual DNA. The team does this by taking muscle biopsies from non-athletes and elite athletes from different backgrounds (e.g. normal college student, MMA fighter, Boxer, Weightlifter, etc.) and use highly sophisticated laboratory techniques and equipment to address questions about single fiber "type", size, function, protein quantity, diameter, mitochondria, and myonuclear function. You can get all of our published research here.
At heart, Andy is simply a story-teller and teacher.

Matt Johnson is the Director of Strength and Conditioning at George Washington in Washington DC.
One of the three foundations of Coach Matt Johnson's strength and conditioning philosophy is sport specificity - maximizing athletes' movement and capabilities within their individual sport. Fittingly, Coach Johnson has been able to hit the ground running in his new role as GW Athletics' Director of Strength and Conditioning.
Coach Johnson's three-pronged philosophy - a "melting pot" formed from wide-ranging, high-level experiences in the strength and conditioning, sports performance and fitness realms - boils down into one simple goal - to make "technically proficient athletes."
"If an athlete can move efficiently in the weight room under load, then they're going to move efficiently on the basketball court, soccer field or lacrosse field," said Coach Johnson.
He'll oversee a GW Strength and Conditioning Department that will not only work to maximize the performance of student-athletes from all 23 varsity athletics programs, but also serve as a trendsetter in the industry. "We want to place GW on the forefront, be highly regarded and thought of as forward-thinking in utilizing new-age methodology and technology," said Coach Johnson, who recently served as a keynote presenter at the Stronger Team Huddle basketball strength and conditioning educational summit at the Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.
While possessing a varied background, Coach Johnson has carved his niche in basketball, a sport he played as an undergraduate at NCAA Division III Marywood University where he earned his bachelor's degree in exercise science in 2007. He went on to complete his master's degree in kinesiology at Bridgewater (Mass.) State College in 2009 before working with the basketball, hockey and lacrosse programs at Division I Boston College and Bryant University. Johnson holds numerous gold standard strength and conditioning certifications such as the NSCA CSCS, NSCA CPT, USA Weightlifting Club Coach, USA Track and Field Level 1 and NASM PES.
Most recently the Strength and Conditioning Coach for Montrose Christian School's nationally prominent basketball program, Coach Johnson trained former Mustang and current GW men's basketball student-athlete Kevin Larsen, and is also familiar with Patricio Garino and Miguel Cartagena from Montverde (Fla.) Academy, regular opponents of Montrose.
While his and his staff's primary goal is to maximize performance enhancement in GW's student-athletes, Coach Johnson maintains perspective when it comes to his goal as an educator. "I'm building bodies, but also building minds. I want to be a positive mentor, to teach and lead our student-athletes to be successful inside and outside the lines. I am invested in every athlete I train - seeing them accomplish their goals means the world to me because I know how much it meant to me when I was in their position."
In This Episode We Discuss:
What experience in his journey impacted him the most, and Why.
Biggest mistake he has made and how he learned from it.

Why building minds and being a mentor is important.
